ATLANTA—It was a twist of fate that brought Ms. Dorothy Jones to Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta on Jan. 8.
“It’s all arranged! Someone arranged it, higher than I,” Ms. Jones said.
Ms. Jones lives just two blocks away from the Fox Theatre, and had planned to buy tickets to see New York-based Shen Yun, but got sick.
“I had a wonderful little dog that I had to give away because I could not look after him, and the man that took him left me a surprise because he had seen your brochure on my coffee table,” Ms. Jones said. “The surprise was tickets to this show, which I had planned to buy. So that’s how I’m here.”
As a senior dancer, Ms. Jones was fascinated by the classical Chinese dance performed by Shen Yun.
“I’m 79 years old, and I had my first pair of tap shoes when I was 65 so I danced with a group of older ladies, and we do performing work, and I’m just so entrenched into how perfect all of these dances are,” said Ms. Jones, who has been attending the Fox Theatre since she was four, when she saw the premier of Snow White.
Ms. Jones was impressed with the grace of the dancers and how “all of their heads are level, every arm movement is perfection, every skirt is going the same way.”
She said the male dancers were just as good as the female dancers, noting that the males were “masculine, and they’re macho” and the females “there’s just something so beautiful about the ladies.” She added “the more there are, the harder it is to get synchronized and be unison in all of their movements and how in the world the sleeves all go the same way.”
In addition to ethnic and folk dances, Shen Yun performs mostly classical Chinese dance.
“Soaking up profound wisdom from every era and dynasty, [classical Chinese dance] has become a complete system of dance embodying traditional aesthetic principles with its unique dance movements, rhythms, and inner meaning,” according to Shen Yun’s website.
“It’s a wonderful show,” Ms. Jones said. “I’m particularly enjoying the coordination, the choreography, the beauty and just how lovely, lovely, everything is on stage.”
