NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Qigong teacher Sarah Cherry and her brother in law Pat Moore enjoyed 5,000 years of Chinese culture brought to life by Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Tennessee Performing Arts theater in Nashville, Tenn., on Feb. 16.

“I think it’s wonderful that [Shen Yun is] getting it out there,” Ms. Cherry said of the New York-based company’s mission to revive traditional Chinese culture.

“Humanity’s treasure was nearly lost, but through captivating music and dance, Shen Yun is bringing this divine culture back to life,” says Shen Yun’s website. Under the Communist Party’s regime, traditonal culture in China had been all but lost, but Ms. Cherry says what Shen Yun does exists “outside the political context,” and touched her in a spiritual way.

“The joy that, too, they seem to exude as they were performing, it really touched my heart,” Ms. Cherry said.

Classical Chinese dance has evolved through the dynasties, distinctly embodying the values of the divinely-inspired culture. According to Shen Yun’s website, this allows “its movements to be richly expressive, such that the personalities and feelings of characters can be portrayed with unparalleled clarity.”

“The way they were able to fill the auditorium with their energy and the love was just, it was just amazing,” Ms. Cherry said. “And the precision and the perfection in the course of all their labor was astounding.”

Ms. Cherry has master’s-level certification in Qigong from the International Institute of Medical Qigong.
