WASHINGTON—A taste of China’s rich history came to life with leaps, twirls, gestures, sword fights, and a good dose of tomfoolery. Shen Yun Performing Arts has returned to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for a week of performances that last through Feb. 3.

John Dulle, who saw New York-based Shen Yun perform Wednesday evening Jan. 30, said, “It’s an amazing performance… It’s quite enjoyable.” Mr. Dulle is a principal with Dwight Consulting.

He said the color and dance were most memorable for him. “The choreography is absolutely superb,” said Mr. Dulle.

Shen Yun’s performances of Chinese dance incorporate classical, folk, and ethnic dance from China’s many minority groups, its company website explains. Shen Yun uses the choreography of the dances to bring stories from history and classic Chinese novels to life. The expressive nature of Chinese dance enables the performers to convey the meaning easily, the website continues.

Mr. Dulle said he enjoyed the history and hadn’t expected to see so much in one show.

“This is a great show. Full of color, full of history. It’s been amazing just to watch, the costumes, and all of it.”
