SAN DIEGO, Calif.—“Go see it to believe it, because otherwise, you’re going to miss the most important thing in your life,” was photographer Joe Heard’s advice to anyone who hasn’t seen Shen Yun Performing Arts.

Mr. Heard and his wife Jodi attended the show at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, leaving a very pleased and happy couple.

Mr. Heard is now retired from the photography business, but worked for 40 years as a photographer, getting to photograph several U.S. presidents while he was working in Washington, D.C., including Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Jimmy Carter. He also worked for 13 years in TV and movies.

“I wish everyone could see this, because the performance and the timing between the orchestra and those people are fantastic. To perform for two hours and never skip a beat, that is the most amazing thing you could see,” he said, full of appreciation.

Shen Yun uses classical Chinese dance to play out and bring to life different stories and legends from China’s 5,000 years of culture. The dances are all set to original music played live by the Shen Yun Performing Arts Orchestra, which uniquely combines both Chinese and Western instruments.

“And the visuals, the backgrounds and the backdrop,” said the photographer, “that’s what makes the show. It’s just unbelievable.”

Behind each dance piece setting the scene is a digital backdrop, which takes the viewer to the different parts and eras of China, and even into different worlds.

“It’s outstanding,” he said. “I would drive to Los Angeles if I had to, to see this show—that’s how good it is.”

Mrs. Heard also enjoyed the show.

“It’s fantastic,” she said. “I just can’t believe what they put into this, and the backdrop is absolutely gorgeous.”

“I just wish everyone could see the culture out of China, and from Taiwan to China to Southeast Asia, it’s amazing,” said Mr. Heard.
