CANBERRA, Australia—Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company gave its opening performance at the Canberra Theatre, Canberra, on Friday, Feb. 15.

The New York-based company is reviving the 5000 year-old traditional Chinese history, legends, and virtues through classical Chinese dance and various ethnic dances.

A very appreciative audience member was Laura Wellington, a performing arts student with a double major in dance and drama.

Ms. Wellington said: “Absolutely amazing, at first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go or not, but as the music came on and the people came to the stage, tears came to my eyes. It was amazing.

“It is really mind blowing, tear jerking. I don’t remember the last time I felt so astounded.

“When I saw everybody come [on] stage, and all the colors, all the costumes, all the music, all the dancing—everything, [I’ve] never see anything like it in my life!”

The handmade costumes of fine silks in brilliant colors flow with the dancers movements that often include leaps and flips.

According to the company’s website, Shen Yun’s one-of-a-kind orchestra, with its all-original compositions, blends East and West like no other.

Ms. Wellington felt she definitely got a feeling for traditional Chinese culture and what it is through their dance. “Absolutely fantastic! At the first I wasn’t quite sure, what I’d be expecting, but I ‘m sure after this I would be much interested in culture, because this is just mind- blowing, I loved it. I think that message gets across well, it’s something that I love to watch.”

New York-based Shen Yun was formed in 2006 by overseas Chinese artists, who wished to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese art forms.

She said the visual effect of the story-based classical Chinese and ethnic or folk dances, “is absolutely amazing! You really get … absorbed in the story, I loved it.”

“Oh, I would absolutely come back on Sunday, because I can’t get enough of it. I would not be able to watch it enough times. No words can be put into how much I love it.

“You’ve never … seen anything like it in your life. Fantastic.”
