NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J.—An evening of classical Chinese dance ended with roaring applause at the New Brunswick State Theater on Oct. 27. A full house of viewers walked away with a colorful lesson in Chinese culture, but Jay Doshi left believing he had found the answer to world peace.
Mr. Doshi, the owner of Krishna Jewelry in New Jersey, said there should be more Shen Yun performances.
Shen Yun Performing Arts is a New York-based classical Chinese dance group dedicated to reviving 5,000 years of Chinese culture.
“People are so busy … stressed out … They don’t think about other countries,” he said. “They don’t think about the history of other countries … but this kind of thing can bring lots of peace in this world.”
Mr. Doshi said there should be more cultural programs like Shen Yun. “When each country understands each other’s culture, it brings them together,” he said. “More people should know [Shen Yun], they should know exactly what Chinese culture is.”
Mr. Doshi said he was particularly impressed with the Shen Yun’s costumes and animated backdrops. Shen Yun’s digital backdrops extend the stage and transport the audience to ancient China—with scenic views that vary from the Himalayan peaks to Tang Dynasty pavilions.
“It’s the most beautiful show,” he said.
Mr. Doshi also said he thoroughly enjoyed the erhu, the two-stringed violin. The erhu is known for its remarkable ability to convey emotions. Each Shen Yun dance is accompanied by an orchestra that integrates the qualities of Eastern and Western instruments.
“I loved all the performances. There should be more of this show,” Mr. Doshi’s wife said.
“More people should know how Chinese culture started. If we don’t teach this to children then everything will be forgotten,” she said. “When you understand other cultures, it’s easy to understand each other.”
