A new daily record for the amount of snow was set in Great Falls, Montana on Monday.

The 5.9 inches as of 5 p.m. broke the previous record of 5 inches, the National Weather Service said.

Overall, the storm has dropped at least 6.9 inches, it added.

The winter storm dropped up to 12 inches of snow in some areas, with the possibility of over one feet in some areas, since that tally was made early in the day.

The snow forced people to use chains on their vehicles in at least two areas, on Montana 66 and US-191, said the Montana Department of Transportation via Twitter.

As of 4:30 p.m., the snow at the Billings airport measured 4.5 inches for the day, though in other parts of the capitol it was less.
