DETROIT—On Saturday afternoon, the Detroit Opera House, the city’s elegant historic venue was lit up by the warm and colorful performances of Shen Yun Performing Arts.

“I think it’s majestic. I love it. It’s absolutely extraordinary,” said John Prosser, partner at Health Partners Inc., a Michigan-based company specializing in providing in-home nursing care.

Shen Yun, the world’s premier classical Chinese dance and music company, is in the city for a brief five-show run as part of its 2013 world tour.

Established in 2006 by a group of overseas classical Chinese artists, the New York based company has set out to revive the true, divinely-inspired culture of China,” according to the company’s mission statement.

Alongside hundreds of works of classical Chinese dance, colorful handmade costumes and a state-of-the-art animated backdrop, Shen Yun’s music also stands out.

The live orchestra is particularly unique in that it combines classical Eastern and Western instruments to produce a fresh, harmonious sound.

Award-winning bel canto singers also sing songs that speak of goodness, hope and divinity.

Mr. Prosser was particularly impressed by the lyrics and noted he appreciated the theme of reincarnation, which is characteristic of Chinese spirituality.

In the song “Do Not Lose Your Way,” soprano Pi-ju Huang sings of the struggles that human beings have to go through lifetime after lifetime, but also of the hope that they have not been forgotten by Heaven.

Mr. Prosser had words of praise for the whole production. “As a theatrical production, I think it’s magnificent. It has wonderful pageantry,” he said.

“Frankly what is superior in life to the composing and the writing of the lyrics, the dance and the execution of [the dance] as a team with the orchestra.

“I think it’s extraordinary and wonderful,” he said.

Wo ai Shen Yun,” Mr. Prosser said happily, meaning “I love Shen Yun” in Chinese, words he had just been taught by the show’s bilingual emcees.
