PHOENIX, Ariz.—“The dancing was sensational,” said Hugh Downs, renowned newscaster and commentator, after seeing Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company at the Orpheum Theater on the afternoon of March 10.
Hugh Downs is an icon in broadcasting; his career spanned more than 50 years and he worked for ABC, NBC, and PBS. Add to that winning two Emmy awards, being nominated for three more, and receiving numerous other prestigious awards, he can appreciate the expertise of Shen Yun’s performance.
“Very good. Really well done,” said Mr. Downs.
Mr. Downs was accompanied by his wife, Ruth Downs, and their great granddaughter. Mrs. Downs is also a retired broadcaster.
Based in upstate New York, Shen Yun Performing Arts has toured the globe each year since 2006, with a mission to revive China’s ancient traditional culture through the performing arts.
Mrs. Downs said, “We enjoyed this very much.”
“Chinese dance is at the heart of what Shen Yun does. Known for its incredible flips, and spins and its gentle elegance, it is one of the most rigorous, and expressive art forms in the world,” states the Shen Yun website.
Mr. Downs was impressed by the technical skills of the dancers: “Very well done,” he said.
“We saw it advertised for a long time and we finally got to see it,” said Mr. Downs. “I would say if you get a chance to see this [do it].”
The afternoon performance played to a full house and received a resounding standing ovation.
