MONTREAL—On a snowy Thursday night, spectators gathered for Shen Yun Performing Arts’ opening show in Montreal at one of the biggest theatres in Canada, the Place des Arts.
Among them were equipment business owner Paul Ostiguy and long-time graphic designer Sylvie Dareche.
As a professional designer, Dareche said Shen Yun was “very beautiful.” Not only did she love the costumes, but also the dynamic backdrops which are a unique feature of each Shen Yun performance.
“It’s just very colorful and it’s perfect,” she said, calling the spectacle beautiful.
The New York based Shen Yun was established seven years ago and has been vowing audience around the world as the three touring groups visit major metropolises each year.
“I love it, I love it,” Mr. Ostiguy agreed.
Shen Yun was founded on a mission to revive 5,000 years of divinely inspired Chinese culture. It’s performance spans that history, visiting China’s diverse regions, histories and ethnic groups. Much of that culture has been destroyed after 60 years of communist rule, notes Shen Yun’s website.
“The deeper spiritual core of the ancient culture, with its values of benevolence, honor, propriety, wisdom, and sincerity, as well as a reverence for the gods and the heavens, cannot be destroyed,” it reads.
Mr. Ostiguy said he appreciated Shen Yun’s efforts.
“I think it’s fabulous to see that they fought to maintain it, and that they’re now sharing it with us, we’re very happy to be here,” he said. He really enjoyed that the dancers were dressed in traditional style clothes.
“It’s just something like I’ve never seen here in Canada. It’s just beautiful, just beautiful,” Ms. Dareche added.
Ostiguy who has been practicing martial arts for many years and studied karate, said he was thoroughly impressed with the agility of the male dancers.
“The agility of the male dancers and the beauty and the elegance of the female dancers,” he said, were what impressed him most about Shen Yun’s performers.
