HAMILTON—Percy Pierre, a financial security advisor with Freedom 55 Financial and former CEO of a marketing and distribution company, found new dimensions of Chinese culture after attending Shen Yun Performing Arts at Hamilton Place Theatre Tuesday night.
“It was wonderful, very entertaining, very informative as well. I learned a lot about the culture which was good for me. It was a very good show,” said Mr. Pierre.
He said he enjoyed the music, choreography, and costumes of Shen Yun. New York-based Shen Yun tours with a unique orchestra that combines Western and classical Chinese instruments. Each dance combines new costumes and digitally projected backdrop that is often animated.
“It was culturally enriching because I learned a lot about China and Chinese culture.”
“Everything is telling stories. It gave me some insight into sort of the belief structure of Chinese people which of course coming from the West we’re of course not always privy to that. So I thought it was enlightening in that respect.”
He said the tickets were a gift from his daughter.
“It was wonderful. I will be telling her that.”
Also in attendance Tuesday night was Mary Lovering, a professor at Brock University, Faculty of Education.
“It is the most beautiful show I have ever seen in Canada…This is beautiful, just a fantastic evening,” she said.
“It is such an experience, because it is so in sync with each other, the movement, the music, the orchestra, all of it is such a beautiful aesthetic experience. It is incomparable.”
She said the performance gave her a feeling of “Pure joy. Absolute joy.”
She said she would tell her students to experience the show if at all possible.
“Come out and appreciate it and understand the perfect amalgamation of artistic experience, education, and learning and growth.”
“It’s something everybody should enjoy. The kind of thing that I believe every single person should experience and appreciate for what it is. It is an appreciation of culture, song, artistry, dance, spirituality, movement. It is a complete package.”Shen Yun, which is based in New York, tours the world each year with an entirely new show featuring classical Chinese dance as well as ethnic dances and folk dances. Three companies, each with its own orchestra, tour with vocal soloists and a digital backdrop presenting vivid animations that expand the stage into sometimes heavenly realms.
