NASHVILLE, Tenn.—At Shen Yun International Company’s final performance on Feb. 17 at Tennessee Performing Arts Center, a distinguished Air Force veteran and his wife felt inspired.
Retired Colonel Wayne E. Dillingham and his wife Chong Hui Dillingham saw Shen Yun for the first time. She said with joyful expression, “I loved it, and everything was awesome and beautiful. You get to see dancing, singing, a movie, orchestras; and the message you are trying to give out to the world, and everything was so beautiful and great.”
Shen Yun is reviving China’s 5,000-year-old civilization, using the universal language of music and dance. It includes a full orchestra and digitally projected animated backdrops.
Mrs. Dillingham is from Korea, and her husband has a strong affinity for the East. He lived in Korea for two years, he said, and has seen extraordinary performances from Eastern cultures both in Korea and at the Kennedy Center, “but this was just absolutely fantastic, it’s just as good or better than anything I have ever seen before. I liked it very much. I like Asian culture.”
He related to the lyrics sung by Shen Yun vocalists and said, “Yes, I found several things related to us, I did. I especially liked one of the numbers at the beginning where What is the Meaning of Life was sung. That was a beautiful song. We thoroughly enjoyed What is the Meaning of Life.”
Soprano Chia-Ning Hsu sang the song, which includes the line “The truth can unlock the memory.”
In his opinion, the song held a message of “peace and a opportunity for reflection, for deep thought on the meaning of life.”
He found it very inspirational, he said.
One of the thoughts he took away from the experience was that as human beings we all should try our best “to be kind, one to another.”
Col. Dillingham and his family recently celebrated his hwangap, or 60th birthday, with traditional Korean food and dress, according to the Times-Gazette. He was Legal Advisor to HQ U.S. Space Command, with a knowledge of Space Law and Military Operations.
