SYDNEY—Two figure skating coaches, Ms. Veronica Sobolena and Mr. Slav Baboshyam, came to watch Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Capitol Theatre on Feb 12, the final performance in Sydney for the 2013 world tour.
New York-based Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through classical Chinese dance and music.
Both Mr. Baboshyam and Ms. Sobolena moved to Australia from Russia 20 years ago, where they were trained in figure skating, which they now teach in Australia.
As figure skating involves its own set of techniques and dance movements, Mr. Baboshyam and Ms. Sobolena could appreciate the skill and teamwork of the Shen Yun dancers.
“It’s very easy to watch because it’s beautiful and the costumes are very well-designed, and very good technique,” said Mr. Baboshyam. “Everything is organised so well. Just everybody works like a machine.”
The Shen Yun performers are consummate dancers, and the costumes they wear onstage are vibrant and colourful. Ms. Sobolena was swept away by the sheer beauty of the performance.
“I’m thinking … trying to take it in, everything possible. So beautiful. So unusual and just so breathtaking,” she said.
Ms. Sobolena says she will encourage her friends and family to experience Shen Yun for themselves.
“Go watch it. Yes! “ she said.
