ESCONDIDO, Calif.- “It’s spectacular. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life,” said retired businessman Bill Menderson after attending Shen Yun’s New Year’s Eve matinee performance at the California Center for the Arts.
“I’ve been to China five times. I’m very familiar with a lot of the country, but I’ve never ever seen anything as entertaining and as beautiful as this!” Mr. Menderson said. He enjoyed the performance with his daughter, Sandy Menderson, who is also a business owner.
“The show was fantastic, absolutely fabulous, and it beat all my expectations,” said Ms. Menderson.
Shen Yun’s orchestra amazed Mr. Menderson. “Fascinating. It’s thrilling, exciting. It keeps you right at the edge of your seat,” he said. “Unbelievable music. I love Chinese music anyway, always have. Everything in it was spectacular … unbelievable.”
The Shen Yun Symphony Orchestra is a matchless blend of classical Eastern and Western instruments, which gives rise to an ethereal sound that brings to life the stories, and at the same time touches the hearts and minds of the audience.
“Oh, I would recommend it to everybody,” said Mr. Menderson.
“If you want to see something only [once] in a lifetime, this is it. You’ll never see anything like this anywhere else,” he added. “If you ever have the opportunity to see it, see it. I’m planning to see it again. It was so delightful.”
Via the arts, Shen Yun strives to bring to the stage China’s ancient history, classic literature, myths, and legends as a way to revive 5,000 years of culture nearly lost to communist rule.
A team of designers creates elaborate handmade costumes that enrich the storyline and bring the entire production to new heights.
Ms. Menderson said she really enjoyed the costumes and dance. “The storyline was beautiful, too,” she said. “The orchestra was fantastic, just fabulous!”
In summing up her experience, Ms. Menderson said, “I was just overwhelmed by it.”
When asked if she would recommend Shen Yun, Ms. Menderson stated that she “absolutely” would. Adding, “[It’s] outrageous, indescribable, romantic, irresistible; just fabulous.”
