MISSISSAUGA, Canada—Shen Yun Performing Arts features hundreds of handmade costumes, a buffet of colour that impressed Roberta Pinarello, a businesswoman experienced in fashion.
“I love the costumes, the colours, combinations,” said Mrs. Pinarello during the intermission.
“The dancing is wonderful, and it takes so much energy,” she added.
Mrs. Pinarello has largely retired, having previously owned a women’s fashion boutique. But she still enjoys coordinating fashion shows for charity events, something in which she has a great deal of experience, both for fundraisers as well as her own business.
And while Shen Yun is a new experience for her, she is truly finding it delightful.
“This is the first time I’ve seen this dance program and I’m really enjoying it,” she said.
Shen Yun displays a visual feast of exquisite costumes, from imperial dragon robes to cloud capes, from the warrior’s helmet and armour to the ethnic attire of Tibetans.
“Shen Yun’s costume artists collect countless designs of traditional attire, ranging from those of emperors, ministers, and generals to the everyday clothing of the common people. They use bright colours to tailor and recreate hundreds of new pieces each season,” reads Shen Yun’s website.
“I loved them, they were marvellous,” said Mrs. Pinarello, praising the costumes while also commending the costume artists.
“The way they put those colours together, it was amazing! It takes talent to be able to use colour the way they do,” she said. “I think that [Shen Yun has] very talented people that worked hard at putting together the costumes.”
She also praised the dancing and the stories told through the dances. Many of the dances present mini-dramas based on stories and legends that span China’s 5,000-year history.
“It’s nice to know something more about China and Chinese people,” Mrs. Pinarello said.
“The music is lovely. It’s very nice. The singers were very talented,” she added.
She noted that she and her husband had excellent seats, making the performance that much more enjoyable.
Mrs. Pinarello and a friend saw Shen Yun advertised and talked their husbands into bringing them. Her husband was also enjoying the performance, she said.
