QUEBEC CITY—At her first experienced of Shen Yun Performing Arts, veteran dancer Josianne Roy was left in awe and disbelief.
Ms. Roy attended the Jan. 8 performance at Grand Théâtre de Québec and said although she sees almost every dance show that comes to town, Shen Yun is the best she’s ever experienced in her life.
“I love dance and this is truly the most impressive show I’ve seen,” she said.
“I’ve never seen such good dancers. The costumes, everything—there are no mistakes, the dancers are perfectly synchronized—it’s incredible.”
Ms. Roy has danced for the past 15 years in various styles from modern to belly-dance. She currently works at Collège d’enseignement général et professionnel (CEGEP) as a chemistry teacher.
Based on her technical experience, Ms. Roy said Shen Yun has surpassed all other performances because it has perfected every element from technique, to story, to emotional expression.
“There is humour, there is everything, really. There is expression in the movements, the synchronicity, the costumes, the agility, the originality, the movements,” she said. “I can’t even believe it.”
Other renowned large-scale performances she has seen have lacked at least one element, such as storyline, vision, or choreography, she says, but Shen Yun is the only one that is “truly perfect.”
New York-based Shen Yun is a world-renowned classical Chinese dance and music company. Featuring story-based dance that spans China’s 5,000-year history, the show aims to revive the country’s divinely-inspired culture through classical Chinese dance and ethnic or folk dance.
According to the Shen Yun website, classical Chinese dance is one of the most comprehensive dance systems in the world.
“Soaking up profound wisdom from every era and dynasty, it has become a complete system of dance embodying traditional aesthetic principles with its unique dance movements, rhythms, and inner meaning,” states the website.
Ms. Roy was particularly entranced with the grace and femininity of Shen Yun’s female dances.
“With their beautiful dresses I found their performance to be extraordinary,” she said, adding one of the most memorable moments in the show was a dance called Ancient Elegance.
The piece features costumes with long silken sleeves that accentuate the dancer’s every movement.
“Light and lovely, they glide like whispers on the wind, skillfully spinning with long silken sleeves,” says the Shen Yun program book. “Their dainty steps and delicate forms evoke the epitome of feminine grace.”
