MINNEAPOLIS—As a businessman who travels frequently to China, Doug Ward really enjoyed learning more about Chinese culture as he watched Shen Yun Performing Arts New York company onstage at Minneapolis’s Orpheum Theatre.
New York-based Shen Yun aims precisely to bring traditional Chinese dance and music from its 5,000 years of civilization to the world.
Fresh from sold out performances in Milwaukee, Shen Yun boasts “Standing ovations at the world’s top venues, royalty attending in Europe, sold-out shows throughout North America, and packed houses across Asia have made Shen Yun an international phenomenon,” according to the company’s website.
Mr. Ward was impressed with the dancers’ prowess: “I like the performance. They get up so high in the air and they hold they positions—so very good dancers.”
At the heart of Shen Yun is classical Chinese dance, with systematic training in its movements and postures. It is also known for its difficult leaps and tumbling techniques.
“The dancers, it’s amazing the flexibility, where they can pull their leg way up behind themselves. And then, also, some of the jumps where they go up. It almost looks like they hang in the air and then come down. So they do very well,” he said.
In addition to classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun specializes in presenting folk and ethnic dances from China’s over 50 ethnicities.
“I just like seeing the different cultures and the dances … you know, the Mongolian ones, and the different dynasties, so it was kind of neat to see those dances,” Mr. Ward said.
“It’s a good example of different cultures through the years in China, with the dances that go along with them from those different ethnic groups. That’s what I like—that’s very good,” he said.
New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
