HOUSTON—Jim and Ellen Ellison saw Shen Yun Performing Arts in Houston two years ago. This year they recruited three friends to see the performance with them.

“We came from Brenham, Texas. We came to the city just for the show,” Ms. Ellison said.

Brenham is about an hour’s drive from Houston, depending on traffic.

“I am a teacher, so the history was very important, but the dancing was also extraordinary. I love dance,” she said.

Mr. and Mrs. Ellison started a wholesale floral company in Brenham around four decades ago, and later retired, selling the business to their youngest daughter.

Mrs. Ellison said she wished her two granddaughters could have seen Shen Yun with them.

“I thought it was wonderful. I enjoyed it very much,” she said.

Mr. Ellison said Shen Yun was extraordinary.

“I think it’s fabulous because of the precision, the costumes, and I love the music. I love Chinese music,” he said. According to the Shen Yun website, the Eastern and Western orchestra is unlike any other. “The ability to seamlessly blend these two systems to create one fresh, harmonious sound is what makes the Shen Yun Performing Arts Orchestra unique.”

Mr. Ellison said he had wanted to see Shen Yun again because the program is new each year.

He hopes he may have another chance to hear Tang Dynasty style drumming. “I want the drums again,” he said.

New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts has three touring companies that perform simultaneously around the world. Shen Yun’s International Company will be performing in Houston through January 1. For more information, visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org
