QUEBEC CITY, Canada—During Shen Yun Performing Arts’ debut performance in Quebec City—sold out three weeks in advance—a crowd of nearly 2,000 gave an enthusiastic welcome to the renowned classical Chinese dance company at the Grand Théâtre de Québec on Tuesday night.

“I am amazed by so many colours, this is a wonderful evening,” said esthetician and salon owner Sylvie Pomerleau.

Ms. Pomerleau commended the show for making her feel calm and relaxed. “The beauty is in all the colours. The movements are perfectly executed. It is very beautiful to the eye and it is good for the soul and the heart,” she said.

“It’s really a show that does us good,” she said.

Shen Yun is a New York-based company that aims to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture through song and dance. The company was established seven years ago and has performed before millions around the world.

The esthetician said the show was very spiritual for her, bringing out kindness, forgiveness, and wisdom.

She said she had heard about the show from one of her clients at the salon. It made her want to see the show and she even offered promotional flyers to her customers.

“I had heard a lot about this show and I am very happy to have seen it,” she said.

“I realized tonight that many of my clients are here,” Ms. Pomerleau added.

Shen Yun is translated as the beauty of divine beings dancing, which Ms. Pomerleau saw clearly in the show. She commended the youthful dancers for their precision.

“Their dancing is perfect,” she said. Saying that sometimes she got a little carried away by sinking into the emotions of the dancers who were on stage.

“We could feel the same emotions they were expressing,” she said.

One of Shen Yun’s unique features is the digital backdrops that interact with the dancers on the stage, transforming the audience to another world.

“I love the characters coming out of the big screen—it’s truly spectacular,” Ms. Pomerleau said.

The company is composed of three equally large companies that tour the world, each with its own orchestra, entertaining audiences with a unique sound that blends the sounds of East and West by combining classic Western instruments and traditional Chinese instruments.

“I love the music. … It makes me discover a music that I did not know before,” Ms. Pomerleau said.
