SYDNEY—Julia Patrick, a writer, was impressed by Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company’s opening performance at the iconic Capitol Theatre on Monday, Feb. 11.
“It’s just lovely. The girls are so beautiful and the men are so athletic—how they manage those leaps and bounds I don’t know,” Ms. Patrick said.
Based in New York, Shen Yun has a mission to revive China’s 5,000-year history portrayed in classical Chinese dance and music, an orchestra joining instruments East and West, beautiful costumes, and a stunning back drop, according to the company website.
“Oh it’s stunning, just stunning,” Ms. Patrick said, adding that she would hope to return to see the show again.
Mortals and divine beings merge on stage as one. Principles such as benevolence and justice, propriety and wisdom, respect for the heavens, and divine retribution, all come to life, washing over the audience, the website said.
Ms. Patrick found the dance, An Unexpected Encounter, inspiring. During a tour to China, a father and daughter are taking photos in a park. On one side stands a trio of people who practice the spiritual discipline known as Falun Dafa. One of them holds a banner declaring, “Truthfulness, Compassion, Tolerance”—the tenets of their persecuted practice.
“Who wouldn’t be inspired by that?” Ms. Patrick asked. She was greatly impressed with the graceful elegance of the female dancers.
“I think the grace of the girls is so wonderful—it makes me want to be more graceful.”
‘Enjoyment and gratitude for the Chinese culture’
English schoolteacher Sue King was also amidst the audience soaking up the atmosphere.
“It was just majestic really. I love the scenery in China, the mountains, all the beautiful structures and architecture and the costumes of the dancers were just amazing.”
She said Shen Yun “paints a joyful picture” of China. “My impression of Chinese people is that they’re able to enjoy life as they find it … This show just shows the enjoyment and gratitude for the Chinese culture.”
Ms. King spent two years teaching in China and will return to China as a volunteer for one month each year to teach English.
