ESCONDIDO, Calif.—Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company continued to wow Southern Californians at its ninth show in the area this season, presented at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.
Ron and Sandy Snodgrass came to the matinee performance after seeing several ads and talking friends who had already seen it.
Mr. Snodgrass is retired, having owned a fire sprinkler business, and Mrs. Snodgrass is retired from teaching decorative arts at her own studio.
“Absolutely amazing!” Mrs. Snodgrass said of Shen Yun.
“I’ve never seen anything where they incorporated people into the way that it’s being done here,” she said about the digital backdrop. “I’ve never seen that before. That’s outstanding!
The backdrop changes with each scene and also supports animation that literally blends it into the stage. One moment you are in a palace and then in the next scene you are seeing beings from heavenly realms effortlessly float from above down onto the stage, where suddenly, they appear in real life. The other scenes see a performer onstage suddenly leaving earth to higher realms in an almost seamless action.
“Yeah, that’s very neat! How it starts out up here and comes on stage,” said Mr. Snodgrass. “Better than Radio City Music Hall!
Ron especially liked the orchestra. He said, “It’s great! Super!”
The Shen Yun website describes the Shen Yun Performing Arts Orchestra this way: “A Western philharmonic orchestra plays the foundation, while traditional Chinese instruments lead the melodies. The sound produced is uniquely pleasing to the ear. The ensemble at once expresses both the grandeur of a Western orchestra and the distinct sensibilities of China’s 5,000-year-old civilization.”
Sandy said the dances that stood out for her were “the ones that have the spinning fans with the lotus leaves and the costumes with the green tassels.”
“I thought it was great, beautiful!” she said.
