HOUSTON—Shen Yun Performing Arts led its week of performances in Houston with a full house in Jones Hall on Dec. 21.
Sue Moraska, director of VAST Academy, said she thought the New York-based company’s performance was “just spectacular.”
“I’ve never seen anything like this before, you know with the combination of the music and the dance,” Ms. Moraska said.
Shen Yun’s performances include solo vocalists, classical Chinese dances and ethnic and folk dances, accompanied by an orchestra blending East and Western instruments.
“I love the back, the scenery, the animated. I love the way that people just seem like they came from the animation right onto the stage,” Ms. Moraska said, referring to the projected backdrops accompanying Shen Yun’s performances. The animated scenery ranges from heavenly scenes to China’s countryside, and give the illusion that the dancers are seamlessly dancing from stage to screen.
“The scenery was so beautiful. Every time a new scene came up … I wished I was there,” Ms. Moraska said.
Ms. Moraska added that she enjoyed the stories told through some of the dances, and the spirituality of Chinese culture. She said that she hadn’t realized the Chinese Communist regime’s persecution of spiritual beliefs was still a present issue.
“I liked the stories and what was going on. It was very spiritual to me, with the Buddhas and the fairies. I mean I just loved it. I just loved it. I almost felt like a kid again watching … I almost felt like a child, you know watching from a book that came to life,” Ms. Moraska said.
“The costumes are just so beautiful and colorful. The colors. That’s what I love—the
vibrant colors, the colors of the scenery and costumes and of course the singing of the tenor.”
