Melissa Mark-Viverito Wins Re-election in NYC Council District 8

Incumbent Melissa Mark-Viverito has won re-election in Manhattan’s City Council district 8.

Mark-Viverito won with 36.20 percent of the vote as of 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday, with 87 percent of the precincts reporting.

Ralina Cardona got 18.50 percent of the votes; Ed Santos got 15.80 percent; Tamika Humphreys got 10.97 percent; Sean Gardner got 9.54 percent; and Gwen Goodwin got 9 percent.

The district in northern Manhattan and parts of the Bronx includes El Barrio/East Harlem, Mott Haven, and Concourse. 

Mark-Viverito is considered to be in the running to be the next speaker of the City Council. Speaker Christine Quinn lost in the mayor’s race.
