There was once a day—long, long ago—when the family shared one bathroom. One bath for the entire family was the norm. Today, our affinity for master bathrooms, guest bathrooms, children’s bathrooms, and bathrooms for everyone in between, has created a plethora of tiles and toilets to scrub.

Women are the worst offenders for bathroom-space issues. Our “stuff” tends to overtake just about every available surface in the bathroom and we leave everyone else with a three-inch-square spot to put their things. Instead of letting bathroom-space issues become an issue in your happy marriage, use the tricks below to design a bathroom that can easily accommodate him and her.

My Side, Your Side

As juvenile as it may seem to divide the bathroom in half for storage, this is often the best way to organize everyone’s things. Designate one-half of the room for his things and one-half for hers. As tempting as it may be to encroach on his space, it is really best to divide equally. This is especially important for drawers and cabinets in bathroom vanities. The hardest part about this will be deciding who gets which half.

Organize

Once the sides have been determined, it is time to organize everything in the room. Start by pulling everything out of the drawers and cabinets and separating them by who they belong to. Cleaning supplies should have their very own cabinet space under the sink or on a high shelf in the closet.

If you’re good at organizing spaces, organize your partner’s drawers and cabinets as you put his things back inside. If he’s particular about where his things go, ask him to organize his own space so that it’s just the way he likes it.

In fact, you can have a bathroom cleaning and organizing party for just the two of you. Throw away out-of-date products and toss out those things that you have no intention of ever using again. Once you start organizing, you may find stashes of products you had forgotten about.

Color Scheme

Once the sides are designated and organized, the only thing left is the decoration. Pick a neutral color and/or theme that you both find appealing. A bright, frilly pink bathroom will probably not be the most comfortable spot in the room for your partner, so pick a neutral tan, gray, yellow, or white that you can both live with.

Purchase two sets of towels that coordinate with the color scheme—one for him and one for her. By having your own color towels, you will ensure that you never forget whose is whose again.

Decorating a bathroom for him and her can be tricky. Be sure that both people are invested in making the room better organized and more appealing. When you can work together to get the space done in the way that you both like, you will find that it stays cleaner and more organized for much longer.
