Ford Motor Co. announced that it is recalling more than 10,000 redesigned 2013 Escape SUVs after discovering that the carpet padding could get in the way of braking.

The recall affects Escape vehicles manufactured from March 8 to June 7. Ford will notify owners of the recall to go to their dealers, who will remove the carpet padding and left-side console trim panel and replace the vehicle with a new panel free of charge, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Ford said the recall affects 8,266 vehicles in the United States, about 2,000 vehicles in Canada, and a few hundred in Mexico.

The problem involved in the recall has not been associated with any reports of accidents or injuries. The problem was discovered through internal evaluation, Ford said.

The recall is expected to begin on July 23.

Ford sold 28,500 Escapes in June, up 28 percent from June 2011.
