I have just discovered a wonderfully talented Turkish designer by the name of Nedret Taciroglu. Contrary to many designers who seem to think women are nocturnal animals who only go out at night and then wear only thongs and sheer wisps, this designer actually does coats.
And what beautiful coats they are. Taciroglu does a white swing coat with elbow-length sleeves and a black beaded one—both are stunning. She does some short black cocktail dresses that could single-handedly make jeans obsolete. They make you yearn to get dressed up and act adult.
There's a white cocktail dress with black beading that swings in the back. I want it. In fact, I kept saying to myself with every number, "I want it … I want it." She does a sleeveless dress that is white in front and black in back that I want, too.
She does a number of dresses with uneven hems, which are interesting. Her clothes are clothes, not thongs and wisps. They make women look ladylike instead of like strippers. She deserves to show with the big boys like Ralph Lauren and Oscar de la Renta, and I hope she gets the chance.
I saw another designer from India, Sushma Patel, and I really don't know what to say about her. She is undeniably talented. But sitting in the front row as I was, I was able to examine her clothes fairly closely. The fabrics were very cheap. There were loose threads.
I was very surprised and thought perhaps it was just my reaction. But I spoke to the people sitting next to me and they agreed with me. Cheap. Her long dresses were very pretty and wearable except for the quality of the fabric. None of us could understand this.
There was another show of fashion leggings from South Korea by a company called Bloom Boom Boom. They showed the layered-look with footlets, socks, and tights. I liked it very much. Some of the tights were color-blocked and fun, and some were much the sexy lady. But all were in good taste.
It was a pleasure to see clothes that were wearable and in good taste—unlike the things I reported in my earlier column, which were perfect for a stripper but no one else.
