A magnitude-6.0 earthquake hit China's southwestern Yunnan Province on the evening of July 9, with more than 1,260,000 residents involved and one dead, according to China's National Seismic Network.
Among the victims in 55 townships of six counties, 290 were injured and 24 were severely injured as of 00:33 a.m. on July 10. More than 18,000 homes toppled and 39,794 were damaged, local authorities said.
The quake occurred at 7:19 p.m. local time at a depth of about 6.2 miles, with the epicenter in Yao'an County's Guantun township, about 124 miles from Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan Province. The quake was followed by nine aftershocks measuring 2.8 to 4.1.
The power went off around the epicenter and the victims were settled temporarily in open areas. Strong tremors were felt in Kunming, Lijiang City and Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture.
Yao'an County, covering an area of 696 square miles, is located in central Yunnan Province and inhabited by 23 ethnic groups with the total population of 207,900.
