Liana Andrews, 16, and 14-year-old friend Kacie Watson vanished in San Antonio, but when they were found, law enforcement believe the girls simply ran away and made up a plot.
Andrews and Watson disappeared on Aug. 17 with a family car, but it was later found abandoned in San Antonio. Authorities believed that a man lured them into the city.
However, officers said that the girls actually planned the escape, and they were trying to go to Denver.
“They planned down how far it takes to get from one city to the next. How much gas it takes and they even planned their potty breaks,” Sgt. Doug Thomas told KHOU-TV. Authorities discovered journals that laid out their plans.
In the plot, authorities said the girls made a false Facebook account belonging to a man named Shaun Hernandez they were going to meet.
The two were found safe, panhandling at San Antonio Wal-Mart, reported News 92.
Police said that it was unclear why the two teens wanted to run away or for how long.
“I’ve been doing this for 10 years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” added Sgt. Thomas. “It was every time we turned the page -- we always scratched our heads and couldn’t figure out why you would do that.”
