NEW YORK—Mrs. Richardson, a professor of sociology, came with her family to see the Chinese New Year Splendor. When she was young she danced ballet and African dance.
Mrs. Richardson said that her granddaughter was one of her students, a Thai-Chinese, who bought her a ticket for a previous show a few years ago. “So I brought my family with me today as I wanted them to see it. The class I’ve been teaching was race and ethnicity, so there were different ethnic groups. I heard them say that some of their dancers were raised here in the West, not in the East, and that they want to maintain the culture. So you should really learn more about your culture.”
She expressed the impressions she received from the female dancers: “The femininity is in the hand and feet of the women. There is not so much in other body movement like in other dance forms. … I thought it was beautiful, the way how the women used their hand and feet in unison.”
She found that several aspects make the show special: “The costumes, the precision, the dance movements, the whole group moving in unison, the story lines—it just shows you a different perspective of dance and movement. [DPA shows a different perspective from Western dance forms.]
