I thought I was lucky to “be born in the new society and grow up under the red flag.” However, my own experiences and the catastrophes in my family truly awakened me. So now, I want to cautiously declare that I am leaving Communism. I would like to quit all organizations related to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and say goodbye to the CCP and have a new life.
The Lingering Shadow
In November 1988, friends invited me to travel to Denmark from Shanghai, China. From May to June in 1989, Danish television stations and newspapers reported on the patriotic democratic movement demonstration held by students and citizens on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. Although I was abroad, I was concerned about everything happening in my motherland, and concerned about China’s social changes.
One day, I saw on TV that Chinese military tanks were charging down Chang’an Avenue. They roared by and ran over innocent students and citizens, whose brains were smashed at once. Flesh and blood flew in all directions and the blood flowed like a river. Then, I saw soldiers shooting those scattered demonstrators with rifles. I saw students and citizens fall under a storm of shots and shells.
It was ghastly and appalling. I was unable to fall asleep as the cruel scenes kept running through my head. The CCP’s atrocities shocked me. They aroused my senses. I felt how terrible and how hateful the Chinese government and the CCP were. These events greatly inspired my belief in supporting and participating in Chinese democratic movements.
On the morning after the cruel crackdown, I saw that the front pages of all newspapers in Copenhagen had large photos of the CCP’s bloody crackdown on the democratic movement using the army. Later, a massive demonstration group passed me on the street. They were not only the Chinese men, women, elderly people, and children, but also the different colored Danish people and foreigners. People held banners, shouted slogans like “Overthrow the brutal CCP. Give me back democracy and freedom.” Even more touching was that many participants in the parade were naked to express their resolute support of the patriotic democratic movement on Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.
I was so touched by the scene that I joined the parade immediately despite my fear. I walked with the parade to the Chinese Embassy in Denmark. I saw that several parades had gathered there. People surrounded the Chinese Embassy. People’s hearts were full of anger and they shouted, “Eradicate the violent regime of the CCP and build a democratic process China.”
I had no interest in traveling during the next week; instead, I participated in the demonstrations and the protest rally outside of the Chinese Embassy in Denmark to express my dislike of the CCP government and my enthusiasm for democracy. Although time passed day after day, the terrible scene of the CCP’s crackdown on the student democratic movement could not be erased from my mind. In December 1989, when my visa expired, I went back to Shanghai with fear and a scared outlook.
Returning to Shanghai, I went to work feeling great trepidation. I did not expect that something would happen on the first day. My work unit leader and people from the Public Security Bureau talked with me. They sternly said, “We know about everything you did in Denmark. You participated in anti-government and socialist system activities. You have to honestly explain it clearly and make a profound self-inspection. We’ll deal with it according to your attitude. At the same time, you are prohibited from talking about the activities in Denmark and other countries. Otherwise, you will be responsible for the consequences.”
I was very astonished after hearing such rebukes. What reasonable person with a conscience would not feel indignant about such a bloody crackdown and such brutal acts? In China, people’s objections and protests cannot be tolerated. Authorities talked to me after I arrived back in Shanghai. This showed the level to which this brutal totalitarian regime monitors people!
As I insisted that I had done nothing wrong, and that I would not write a self-appraisal, the leader in my workplace punished me. I was expelled from the public service and my right to work was taken away. I lost the ability to make a living and became an unemployed person. I have talked with my workplace and the government many times but without any positive results over many years.
The Couple’s Families Have Been Persecuted
My father-in-law, Liang Lianguang, was designated a “possible spy” after the CCP gained political power. He was miserably persecuted for many years and died with the false charge at the end of 1989. Many members of my husband’s family were treated unfairly as they were classified as an enemy of the state for many years. Some were persecuted until they suffered a mental collapse, and some escaped from China. My husband was also suppressed and expelled from the public service because he participated in the democratic movement in 1989.
Although his brother-in-law lived in Hong Kong, he was strictly controlled by the CCP and died an unnatural death because he practiced Falun Gong. All these show how evil the CCP is. The CCP is an enemy of the Chinese people. It is the executioner who cripples the Chinese people. All people with a conscience cannot have any illusions about the CCP. They must make a right decision and disassociate from communism.
Now I formally announce my resolute break from the CCP, and quit all organizations related to the CCP. I decided to join the democratic movement in my mind. Now I live in a democratic country, Australia. I want to cooperate with the wide range of patriotic democrats and Falun Gong practitioners to clarify the facts, and oppose persecution and authoritarian rule.
I will make every effort to fight for the 1.3 billion Chinese people and help them get rid of the cage of the communism, for China’s future, for China to be a democratic country, and for all the Chinese people to regain new lives and freedom.
