Chinese officials admitted for the first time that poisonous dumplings exported earlier this year to Japan could have been deliberately laced inside a factory in China, according to a Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) report on Aug. 30.

In January, the frozen dumplings, from China’s Tian Yang Food Corp., sickened dozens of consumers in Japan. Lab testing showed the dumplings contaminated with traces of methamidophos, a pesticide.

Chinese state-run media originally reported in February that various agency investigators—including from the Public Security Bureau and the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine—had concluded there was "little chance" that the dumplings were poisoned inside China.

In July, the Japanese government was accused by the media of ignoring safety concerns because it avoided—at Beijing’s request—disclosing that people in China were also poisoned by the same product from the same company.

China and Japan have long been in dispute over the issue of where the dumplings were contaminated, a touchy issue in already sensitive Sino - Japanese relations.
