LOS ANGELES—Attending Shen Yun Performing Art’s Saturday afternoon performance at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, The Music Center, was former senior conservation lobbyist Mr. Edmondson. Now retired, he worked to save fish and rivers along the coast.
Mr. Edmondson enjoyed Shen Yun’s performance of classical Chinese dance a great deal, saying, “It has been very entertaining, more than I expected.”
Shen Yun performs classical Chinese dances, covering the many dynasties and ethnic groups that make up China’s 5,000-year heritage.
“It’s fantastic—beautiful, graceful, fun, great costumes, wonderful choreography,” said Mr. Edmondson.
He said the short steps of the dancers as they wove across the stage in Mongolian Hospitality particularly impressed him.
“And of course the tiger, the humor of the tiger,” he said of the dance Wu Song Battles the Tiger.
Through classical Chinese dance, Shen Yun performers tell ancient and modern stories. Mr. Edmondson said the performance told him how long the heritage and culture is of the Chinese people. “We went from the beginning [of China’s history] in the first presentation to the persecution, which is more contemporary,” he said.
Mr. Edmondson was referring to one of the programs entitled Nothing Can Block the Divine Path. It is about a mother and daughter who practice Falun Gong in China. In the performance, they are exercising in the park when police attack them and drag them off to a detention center. The mother dies trying to protect her daughter, but heaven is watching.
Mr. Edmondson enjoyed not just the dance, but also the whole production of the performance. “It’s very dramatic—the colors, the lighting and the music. It’s wonderful,” he said.
He thinks the benefit of having this show is that it allows you to appreciate and reach out.
