MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Silken sleeves flow gently in the breeze, lively drumbeats rise from a Miao village, and a lively Tibetan dance. These were just some of the dances that recently graced the historic Orpheum Theatre stage, and drew a standing ovation and long applause.

Presented by Shen Yun Performing Arts, the show portrayed ancient Chinese culture in classical Chinese dance and music.

Lieutenant Governor Ramsey called Tennessee “a special state enriched in music and arts,” when he welcomed Shen Yun to Memphis.

“I am excited for Tennesseans to have the opportunity to engage in the historic and rich culture of the Chinese,” he said.

Also among the show-goers were Mr. and Mrs. Peacher-Ryan and their daughter Anna, a middle school student.

“I really like it, I thought it was really, really beautiful. I love all the costumes—the one with really long sleeves—they were pink and green,” said Anna, smiling and flipping through the program, “Flowing Silk, I really liked it,” she said.

Her mother, who is a lawyer, enjoyed the Miao dance [In a Miao Village], a portrayal of one of China’s oldest ethnic groups renowned for elaborate costuming.

Mr. Peacher-Ryan, a mathematician at a university in Memphis, liked the Tibetan Dance of Praise, in which young men and women dressed in the traditional garb of nobility, celebrate the joys of living in the snowy mountainous region.

Also in the audience was a proud supporter, Ms. Matlock, operations manager for La Prinsa Latina, the premier bilingual Latin American newspaper in Memphis and mid-South for the past 13 years.

Columbian-born Ms. Matlock thanked the New York-based company for sharing with the Latin community the beauty of Chinese culture.

“So it is a bridge between cultures, truly a multi-cultural performance. For a moment, I felt chills, goose bumps, I almost wanted to cry. The message is so well addressed that you feel the emotion, truly.”

In a written speech, Mayor, A.C. Wharton, Jr. gave his blessing to the show: “Given that Memphis is a very diverse city, this spectacular performance is an exhilarating artistic display that celebrates an important part of our constituency,” he wrote.

He added that Shen Yun created “one of the most memorable and heartfelt experiences ever brought to a venue in Memphis.”
