CRICKET AUST (BRISBANE)
Australia's victorious cricketers will return to their homes today as a reward for their quick kill of the West Indies at the Gabba.

Ricky Ponting's team earned two days off after winning the first Test by an innings and 65 runs inside three days.


SHIELD VIC (MELBOURNE)

Queensland will resume on no wicket for 10 in their second innings on day three of the Sheffield Shield match against Victoria at the MCG.

The Bulls still need 173 runs to make Victoria bat again after the Bushrangers enforced the follow-on.


SHIELD WA (PERTH)
Western Australia head into day three of the Sheffield Shield clash with NSW at the WACA Ground precariously placed at seven for 231 in their second innings.

The Warriors' overall lead is just 88 after Blues paceman Doug Bollinger claimed four top-order scalps.


CRICKET PAKISTAN (DUNEDIN, NZ)

New Zealand have won the first cricket Test against Pakistan by 32 runs in Dunedin.

Needing 251 for victory on the final day, Pakistan were dismissed for 218.


SOCCER AL (SYDNEY)
Melbourne Victory have proved too strong for a depleted Gold Coast, winning their A-League clash in Melbourne 4-0.

In last night's other game, North Queensland handed Adelaide United a 2-1 defeat in Townsville.

Today, Sydney FC host Newcastle and Brisbane play Wellington at Suncorp Stadium.


WC18 BIDS (SYDNEY)

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has taken time out on his Caribbean tour to meet FIFA vice-president Jack Warner and again push Australia's case to host a World Cup in 2018 or 2022.

It follows the PM's visit to Zurich in July, when he met FIFA president Sepp Blatter.


SOCCER ENGLISH (LONDON)
Arsenal's Dutch forward Robin Van Persie has been ruled out of action for up to five months after a scan on his injured ankle revealed the need for surgery.

Van Persie Arsenal's top scorer so far this season in the Premier League, suffered torn ankle ligaments during the Netherlands' friendly against Italy two weeks ago.


HOCKEY CHAMPIONS (MELBOURNE)
The Australian men's hockey team have got their Champions Trophy defence off to a perfect start, cruising past South Korea 4-0 in Melbourne.

Olympic champions Germany beat England 3-2 and The Netherlands downed Spain 3-2.

Australia take on the Dutch today.


ATHS GREAT (MELBOURNE)
Kenyan marathon star Samuel Wanjiru is favoured to shake off his jet lag and win today's Great Australian Run in Melbourne.

The Beijing Olympics gold medallist only arrived in Melbourne on Friday night.


NETBALL AWARDS (SYDNEY)
Melbourne Phoenix and national team defender Julie Corletto has won Australian netball's top award, the Liz Ellis Diamond.

Australia's international netballer of the year is Melbourne Phoenix wing defender Renae Hallinan, while Adelaide Thunderbirds centre Natalie Von Bertouch has taken out the ANZ Championship player of the year award.


GOLF OPEN (SYDNEY)
International stars Fred Couples and Vijay Singh have both been forced to withdraw from their coming Australian golf tournaments through injury.

Couples, who was scheduled to play in next week's Australian Open in Sydney, has a back injury while Singh, who was supposed to line up in the Australian PGA Championship at Coolum, has a knee problem.


GOLF AUST (SYDNEY)
Adelaide-based Victorian Jason Norris will take a one stroke lead into today's final round of the NSW Open golf tournament at The Vintage course in the Hunter Valley.

Norris is eight-under par, one shot clear of James Nitties.



RUGBY IRELAND (DUBLIN)
Five-eighth Jonathan Sexton has kicked all of Ireland's points to give his team a 15-10 win over world champions South Africa in Dublin.

Sexton landed five of his seven kicks to ensure Ireland remained unbeaten in their November internationals.


RUGBY SCOTLAND (EDINBURGH)
Argentina have landed a late drop goal to post a 9-6 victory over Scotland in the rugby international at Murrayfield.

Centre Martin Rodriguezlanded the 78th minute winner after Scotland had led 6-0 at halftime.


RUGBY ITALY (ASCOLI PICENO, Italy)
Italy's rugby team have ended a 13-match winless run by beating Samoa 24-6.

The Italians scored two tries, including a penalty try, while former NRL star Craig Gower contributed to their points with a penalty goal.


TENNIS MASTERS (LONDON)

Roger Federer has been eliminated from the ATP World Tour Finals in London, losing to Nikolay Davydenko's 6-2 4-6 7-5 in the semi-finals.

The win is Davydenko's first over the top-ranked Federer in 13 matches.


TENNIS AUST (PERTH)
West Australian Brydan Klein has suffered a straight sets defeat to Matthew Ebden in the semi-finals of the Goldfields St Ives International tennis event in Kalgoorlie.

Alicia Molik's promising comeback has continued with a 6-1 6-2 semi-final win over West Australian Jessica Moore.


TENNIS DAVIS (PRAGUE)
Radek Stepanek and Tomas Berdych will spearhead the Czech Republic's bid for Davis Cup glory when they face Spain in next week's final.

Team chief Jaroslav Navratil says the pair will join Jan Hajek and Lukas Dlouhy to take on the Rafael Nadal-led Spain team in Barcelona from December 4-6.


SURFING WOMEN (SUNSET BEACH, Hawaii)
Women's world surfing championship leader Stephanie Gilmore is into the quarter-finals of the penultimate event of the year in Hawaii but one of her closest challengers, world No.3 Sofia Mulanovich, is out.

Other Aussies in still alive in the event are Sam Cornish, Chelsea Hedges and Sally Fitzgibbons.
