PERTH—Ford's Jamie Whincup has all but clinched the V8 Supercar championship after his nearest rival for the title Will Davison crashed out at Barbagallo Raceway on Sunday.
Whincup finished fourth to Team Vodafone teammate Craig Lowndes in Sunday's 84-lap race in Perth to make his series lead virtually unassailable with two races remaining this season.
He has now opened up a 281-point championship lead over Holden driver Davison.
With 300 points on offer in the final two races in Sydney next month, Whincup just needs to finish to claim back-to-back V8 titles.
Davison struck disaster midway through Sunday's race when his car slid on some fluid left from an earlier accident and hit a tyre wall.
The Commodore was left with heavy steering damage, forcing Davison to retire from the race.
While Whincup had used his set of soft, sprint tyres to win Saturday's race at Barbagallo, Lowndes saved his for Sunday's race and was able to beat Ford's Steven Johnson and Holden's Garth Tander.
