I can imagine APSE thoroughly enjoying protesting the “alt rock” label, with this slightly indulgent, though atmospheric and carefully crafted album. Musically clever, they take us through various genres; at times funky, searching, distorted, grungy, spacey … but never really touching down, offering promise and never quite delivering. Jack of all trades, master of none, as they say.

Experimental is fine, but there must be substance too. Like Animal Collective without the colour, Portishead without the eroticism, Radiohead without the soul, it’s only on the final track ‘Closure’ that APSE truly “climb up” out of mediocrity.
