The Bay Bridge is a major traffic artery in and out of San Francisco.
Transportation officials have shut down the Bay Bridge in both directions as engineers continue to work to assess the bridge. A highway patrol spokesman said that repair work done over the Labor Day weekend came loose on Tuesday evening.
No one was seriously injured in the accident, but a driver of a Ryder Truck sustained a minor injury due to shuttered glass.
The incident was reported at about 5:30 p.m. on the westbound deck, just east of the temporarily built S-curve, near the area where another traffic accident occurred on Oct.15 when a track flipped over and blocked several lanes.
San Francisco Bay Area transportation agencies said that they are preparing to accommodate an increase in riders as the bridge is expected to remain closed for the Wednesday’s morning commute.
The crack in the steel support of the bridge was originally discovered over the Labor Day weekend. Crews toiled day and night to repair the bridge, and inspectors gave all-clear one day ahead of schedule before work rush hour resumed after the Labor Day weekend.
