BRISBANE—"Go west young homebuyer."

That's the message from the release of the 10 cheapest areas of Queensland for the prospective home buyer.

"Potential gems exist for the keen investor who has been priced out of metropolitan and coastal areas if they are willing to invest further west," said Aaron Maskrey, PRDnationwide Queensland research manager.

The PRDnationwide review said Charleville in western Queensland had the cheapest median house prices in June - at $140,000.

Tara, St George, Oakey and the Toowoomba suburb of Harlaxton, all of which are to the west of Brisbane, are also relatively cheap.

To the north of the capital, the historic central Queensland mining town of Mount Morgan, the city of Rockhampton and still further north, the sugar town of Home Hill offer the best prices.

Stanthorpe, southwest of Brisbane, where median house prices were $225,000, completes the top ten list.

A spokeswoman for PRDnationwide told AAP the median house price in Queensland is $398,000.
