SYDNEY—The haunting music composed for feature films Australia and Balibo lead the nominations for the 2009 Screen Music Awards.
The two major Australian films picked up several nominations, including best soundtrack album, best original song composed for the screen and best film score.
The annual awards recognise and celebrate Australian screen composers across film and television, advertising and documentary in 12 categories.
Sydney singer/songwriter Angela Little, who co-wrote best original song nominee By The Boab Tree from Australia with Baz Luhrmann and others, said the director really pushed them to create something special.
"Baz is really involved in every element of the process, and he's really passionate about it too," Little told AAP.
"He would always say, go further. He pushes you beyond where you would get by yourself and it's amazing.
"You look back and go, how did that happen?"
Among the contenders for best television theme were the title tracks for Carla Cametti PD, Satisfaction and the Australia's Next Top Model opening theme Gonna Be On Top.
The Screen Music Awards, presented by the Australian Performing Right Association (APRA) and the Australian Guild of Screen Composers (AGSC), will be handed out at Sydney's City Recital Hall on November 2, hosted by the Chaser's Chris Taylor and Andrew Hansen.
