TORONTO—Mr. Cormier is a legendary concert promoter who cut his teeth in the business when Toronto was a blackhole for original music and cover bands ruled the day.

A lot has changed since then. On Saturday, he came to Toronto's Canon Theatre to take in a show by Shen Yun Performing Arts, the rising classical Chinese dance company that started making its mark in 2006. Since then it has grown to add two more companies and toured 100 cities in over 20 countries this year.

"The sound was great, the orchestra was great, the music was very suitable," said Mr. Cormier.

Among other things, Shen Yun is known for its unique symphony orchestra which combines classical Chinese and western musical instruments.

"It was very good," said his friend Cynthia. "Im really enjoying it," she added before giving special praise to The Udumbara's Bloom, one of dances performed that night.

"It was a nice story and the dancing was beautiful."

"I also liked [The Udumbara's Bloom], " echoed Mr. Cormier. "It was beautiful to look at."

"The costumes were lovely," said Cynthia. "It was very enthusiastic, as were all the performances."

She said she also enjoyed Shen Yun's innovative animated backdrops.

"I had never seen anything like that," added Mr. Cormier. "It was really well done, it had life."

Shen Yun will wrap up its Toronto run on Sunday. For information about upcoming shows visit ShenYunPerformingArts.org . Shen Yun will return to with an all-new 2010 show in January.
