TORONTO—Fashion designer Ms. Rasmussen was wowed by the costuming in the Shen Yun Performing Arts show which she attended at the Canon Theatre in Toronto on Saturday afternoon.
“The fabric is incredible, the way it floats. It floats—it has got to be silk. I know it has got to be silk. I just think of the budget, because it is silk. And the sequence, the hand work, and the detail is astounding. I would love to be in their studio, I really would,” she said.
Ms. Rasmussen, a trained designer who learned to sew when she was just five years old, said the array of colors in the performers’ costumes, all of which are hand made, were “incredible.”
She explained that she has to suspend her knowledge of the technical side of designing in order to enjoy the show.
“There is an entire science to it. I know how and I know why. I have to suspend that whenever I watch the show. This is because my mind will just keep going on about the technical, the technical, the technical.”
Ms. Rasmussen, who made the outfit she wore to the show, said she “absolutely” got some inspiration from the Shen Yun costumes.
She added that when telling her friends about the show, “I would probably say it’s visually stunning and very physically demanding. It’s just really engaging.”
New York-based Shen Yun will present two more shows in Toronto before leaving Canada. The dance company is scheduled to return in January with its all-new 2010 program.
