BRISBANE—Experienced arts director Noel Staunton has been appointed artistic director of the Brisbane Festival.

Having worked in the arts sector in the UK, Australia and the US for more than 30 years, Mr Staunton has created major stage productions in opera, theatre and dance.

He will join the Brisbane Festival after finishing his duties as executive director for the Sydney Dance Company.

Major Brisbane Festivals chairman Chris Freeman said Mr Staunton was the standout candidate to replace Lyndon Terracini, who is leaving the Brisbane Festival to take up his new role as artistic director of Opera Australia.

"Noel's proven experience in managing massive international productions, covering the artistic, commercial and technical aspects has convinced us he is the right man to take on the challenge," Mr Freeman said in a statement.

The 2009 festival finished last week.
