PORTLAND, Maine—With elegant costumes, breathtaking backdrops, and enchanting music performed by an orchestra, the New York-based Shen Yun show is one of the most beautiful and inspiring Chinese cultural shows in the world.

What better way to celebrate a special day!

Mrs. and Mr. Savage, celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary at the Merrill Auditorium on Sept. 19. He builds ships, and his wife is a researcher at Dartmouth College.

When commenting on the show, the couple finished each other's sentences as if completely in agreement and understanding about the spectacular show they had seen.

Mr. Savage was impressed by the universal spirit of this very different culture. "It recognized beautiful sameness that all of us [have], while celebrating the differences of all the varying cultures across China, and then you could expand that to include the world."

Mrs. Savage was fascinated by the message at the end of the show, which showed what she described as a transformation into a new culture, a culture that includes the divine.

"Such a message, I thought it had a very powerful, powerful message," she said.

"The strength of the message is in celebrating the differences while accepting the sameness," Mr. Savage added.

Mrs. Savage added that she felt exhilarated by the ending of the show: "It really brought things together in the second half, everything came together."

Both really enjoyed the drummers in the Drummers of the Tang Court.

When describing this scene, the couple used words like "phenomenal," "wonderful," and "exciting."

Mrs. Savage talked about the high energy of that particular dance: "The guys dancing, very masculine. So very different."

This was her first time to see the show. She has a background in ballet and yoga and was overwhelmed by the experience: "The dancers are so beautiful, I was saying: Wow! I wish I could do that."

Mr. Savage had seen a display in Washington, D.C., advertising the Portland show, and anticipating his anniversary, knowing how much his wife enjoyed dance, he knew that he found the perfect way to celebrate.

Shen Yun will be traveling to Canada to perform in Toronto Oct. 9–11.
