PORTLAND, Maine—The Shen Yun Performing Arts Company brought their magnificent show featuring China's 5,000-year history to Merrill Auditorium on Sunday, Sept. 20, and delighted all who attended.
Mr. Edwards, originally from Taiwan, described the performance as remarkable, appreciating the quality of the show and enjoying seeing Chinese culture onstage.
He helped translate the performance for his friend, Mr. Byke, from Maine. Mr. Byke, a trustee of a medical center, supports the arts. He helped organize the renovation of the Merrill Auditorium in 1997 when it was going to be torn down to build a garage.
Mr. Byke shared how much he was enjoying the show and also that the pair had attended because the traditional nature of the show appealed to Mr. Edwards.
The mission of Shen Yun is to present the beauty of traditional Chinese culture, a culture depicted as divinely inspired.
Mr. Pastrana, a clinical social worker, and his daughter Bianca also appreciated the beauty of the Chinese culture.
Mr. Pastrana explained that the afternoon was a very new experience for him. He had learned a great deal about Chinese culture and history and was particularly taken with the values depicted: "I was also impressed with their beliefs, their belief system. You know the dance—putting it into dance, their interpretation of Chinese history and dance."
Bianca commented on the beauty of the costuming and the set design and the dancing: "All the dancers were very professional."
Shen Yun will be traveling to Canada to perform in Toronto Oct. 9–11.
