PORTLAND, Maine—Shen Yun Performing Arts' debut in the old seacoast town of Portland will linger in the minds of many who attended Merrill Auditorium on Sept. 19. Mr. Landolfi , a businessman, brought his family, Mrs. Landolfi and their daughter.

“The costumes are beautiful, the dancing is wonderful also. The singing ... I've never heard ... the last man that sang, had a voice I've never heard before. It was so lovely,” Mrs. Landolfi said. The family saw Shen Yun perform two years ago in New York, where the company is based.

Mrs.Lanolfi was pleased by the educational side of the show. Shen Yun portrays in classical Chinese dance and music heroic ancient legends, modern tales of courage and diverse ethnic traditions.

“A little bit of the history has been good for my daughter. It has made her enjoy a little more of the show also.”

The performance is built upon China's 5,000 years of history. Gorgeously costumed dancers moved in synchronized patterns. The choreography interacted with digital backdrops and a unique fusion of modern Western and ancient Eastern instrumentals.

'Overwhelming'

Mr. Kaknes is a company president. He and his wife were also enjoying the show.

“The interesting thing for me is the artistic aspect,” Mr. Kaknes said. “What is most overwhelming is the synchronicity of everything ... .”

He was also impressed by thunderous drum rythyms in the sequence, Drummers of the Tang Court and Mongolian Chopsticks, a vivacious dance emphasized by the beat of slapping small bundles of chopsticks against the body.

'An uplifting experience'

Also in the audience was a chef, Mr. St Laurent and his friend Bobby who described himself as a traveler.

“The show was very good,” Mr. St Laurent said. “I just want to say 'It is wonderful to meet everybody. I have had a great uplifting experience ... .”

As for Bobby, he caught a bright mood from the performance. “The show made me giddy,” he said.

Shen Yun will be traveling to Canada to perform in Toronto October 9–11.
