PORTLAND, Maine—New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts debuted at Portland's Merrill Auditorium on Sept. 19 to the delight of an appreciative audience.

Among them were Ms. Atkins, an American business executive and Mr. Drew, a retired businessman, both of whom have had extensive exposure to performing arts of many cultures.

Ms. Atkins expressed her admiration for the world-class artistry of China's 5,000-year-old history staged by Shen Yun in Chinese classical dance and music.

“I thought the movements were beautiful and graceful,” she said. “The coordination of the dancers were beautiful and their ability to use the fan really made you imagine they truly were flowers.”

Against a digital backdrop of trees covered in pink blossom, gorgeously costumed dancers open, shut, and quiver fans in unison depicting the excitement of a new season, after suffering a long cold, harsh winter [Welcoming Spring.]

But her escort, Mr. Drew, had different thoughts.

“Of course, as a man, I liked the last … I liked the drummers [Drummers of the Tang Court.] I thought it was fabulous. It was percussion. It was extremely well coordinated and it had a lot of energy, so I liked it very much.

Classical Chinese dance has its foundations in China's divinely-inspired cultural heritage and with a complete set of training methods and a strict regimen for perfecting bearing and form imbued in a dancer's movements and expression–a portrait of consummate beauty and elegance.

Ms. Atkins watched closely hand and foot work and saw how other cultures, both Eastern and Western had been influenced, even the Hawaiian hula.

Mr. Drew said he enjoyed the performance of the vocalist who was “hitting 'A's' [high notes] all the way. My ears were ringing. It was fabulous.”

Ms. Atkins agreed that the vocalist was “the best singer I have ever heard” in all the performances they had ever seen, anywhere. "She was remarkable," Ms. Atkins added.

A unique blend of groundbreaking music of Western and Chinese composition are one of the trademarks of Shen Yun performed by award winning musicians and composers.

“The music is very nice, the orchestra is excellent, excellent,” said Mr. Drew. “It was very, very good.”

Shen Yun will be traveling to Canada to perform in Toronto Oct. 9–11.
