BRISBANE—Leading Australian playwright David Williamson has announced a new world premiere play, about a cowboy and a violinist.

Rhinestone Rex and Miss Monica will premiere on September 16, 2010 at the Ensemble Theatre in Sydney.

The play is a romantic comedy about a former country singer who meets a classical violinist in his day job as a kitchen installer.

Ensemble Theatre general manager Victoria Wildie said casting had yet to be conducted, but the company had a number of actors in mind.

"Any play by David Williamson is exciting to have in the season because he's such a well-respected writer in this country," Ms Wildie told AAP before the launch on Wednesday.

"Audiences really love his work, they respond to it because it's about real people for real people.

"We're excited we are getting another world premiere."

The play will be directed by Sandra Bates, who directed David Williamson's last world premiere at the same theatre, Let the Sunshine, which was a sellout.
