Hurricane Jimena has become a major storm as it picks up wind speed off the west coast of Mexico.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Jimena has maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour, and forecasters expect it to become even stronger.

The Hurricane Center's latest advisory says the powerful storm is several hundred kilometers south of the southern tip of Baja California. Forecasters say it will probably stay offshore as it moves up Mexico's coastline.

At the same time, Tropical Storm Kevin is also churning in the Pacific, farther out from Mexico. The Hurricane Center says it has top winds of 85 kilometers per hour, with some strengthening possible.
