WASHINGTON—Amidst enthusiastic applause and a standing ovation, Shen Yun Performing Arts concluded its second last performance at the Kennedy Center on Saturday evening.
Ms. Smith, who works in human resources in the Department of Interior, and her friend Ms. Molyneaux, a legal specialist with a major telecommunications company, were among the enthralled audience.
“I thought it was very nice; I particularly enjoyed the dances, the singers the violinist, the colors of the costumes the movements. It was very peaceful and I very much enjoyed it,” Ms. Smith said.
Commenting on the state-of-the art digital animated backdrops used throughout the performances, Ms. Smith said she enjoyed the effects realized by this innovative technology and how it enhanced the performances.
She also noted that she saw a spiritual message in the show and that she enjoyed “the way they interpreted everything.”
“I think with the music and the dancing was a universal message as with dignity and compassion we must all treat each other well,” she said, adding that she saw these themes throughout the show.
Shen Yun Performing Arts is a New York based company that stages shows around the globe each year, presenting Chinese classical dance and music. The company’s guiding mission is to rediscover and renew humanity’s true, rightful cultural heritage.
Ms. Smith also praised the colorful costumes in the show.
“I think the costumes are unique, because they make it unique, and I think that’s what makes it so special, because it’s different,” she said.
Commenting further on the uniqueness of the show, she said, “I think the colors were very unique; they were very bright, I like the way the dancers used their sleeves to make an expression, I liked the way that they had the different colors for the flowers, and the way they flooded for the water, and … I really thought it was unique that the women were covered, their legs, even when they turned, you couldn’t see their body, and that made it very interesting, I thought.”
Ms. Molyneaux said she would recommend the show to her friends and tell them that they have to come and see it.
“I’ve never attended a performance like this before but the dancing was fantastic, the costumes were wonderful and it was just fabulous feeling to be there and I would definitely come again,” she said.
Ms. Smith said that she would likewise tell her friends to come and see the show and tell them about the uniqueness of the show.
“I would tell them that I found it very unusual because it is quite different from the Western type or African type of dance,” Ms. Smith said.
“I thought the movements were very precise particularly when they move their hands and their feet and I realized as I watch them that you have to be very graceful to interpret it that way and I was just would tell them that it is a wonderful experience, it would be something new and that they should bring their children if they could,” she said, noting that it is important to learn about different cultures.
Shen Yun will perform one last show in Washington, D.C., on Aug 30.
