KABUL—At least 30 people were killed and 57 wounded, all civilians, by a massive car bomb that exploded in the southern Afghanistan city of Kandahar, the governor of the province said.

The blast happened shortly after dusk, when Afghans were breaking their fast during the Muslim month of Ramadan.

Witnesses reporting hearing heavy gunfire after the blast.

"There was a car bomb outside a residential house, there are many dead and wounded," said Pashtun Momand, a police officer in Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban.

A Kandahar resident who asked not to be identified said gunfire erupted after the blast, which blew out many windows in the city.
